Germany's Export Market Is Rebalancing Toward the US

The biggest sales market for Switzerland's export economy lost some momentum in July 2026 for the first time since spring. German goods exports fell 0.8% against June on a calendar- and seasonally-adjusted basis, to EUR 138.2 billion. It was the first decline after five straight months of growth.

Look closer at the Germany export market, though, and the same release carries a second, opposite move: business with the US grew sharply, while demand from China, the United Kingdom and the rest of the EU softened. The signal here is not the headline total. It is the shift underneath it.

German exports fell 0.8% in July 2026 to EUR 138.2 billion, the first drop after five months of growth. Against that trend, exports to the US rose 19.1% to EUR 14.4 billion, while shipments to China, the UK and the rest of the EU declined. For Swiss exporters, Germany is the single largest sales market, and this rebalancing shows where demand is moving right now.

  • Down: exports to the United Kingdom, China and the rest of the EU (no per-market figures given).
  • Imports: down 5.7% to EUR 116.9 billion; the trade surplus rose to EUR 21.3 billion, the highest since August 2024.

Why did German exports edge lower?

After five months of rising shipments, German goods exports slipped for the first time in July 2026, down 0.8% on the previous month in calendar- and seasonally-adjusted terms. Year on year the level is still clearly higher, up 6.1% on July 2025. A single monthly dip after a long climb reads as a normalisation, not a slump.

Imports moved more sharply: they fell 5.7% to EUR 116.9 billion. Because exports eased only slightly while imports dropped hard, Germany's trade surplus climbed to EUR 21.3 billion, the highest monthly figure since August 2024.

Why is US business growing while China and Europe soften?

Exports to the US rose 19.1% from June and 28.3% year on year in July 2026, to EUR 14.4 billion. Business with Germany's most important single market outside the EU ran against the general trend, even as shipments to China, the UK and the rest of the EU declined in the same month.

Destatis reports the declines to China, the UK and the EU without publishing individual figures for those destinations. What is solid, then, is the direction rather than the exact size per market: German export demand is visibly tilting toward the United States and away from several markets that had been carrying growth.

What does the Germany export market mean for Swiss SMEs?

Germany is the largest sales market for Switzerland's export economy, so movements in German foreign trade feed straight through to Swiss suppliers and direct exporters. Many Swiss SMEs sell not only into Germany but onward into third markets through German value chains, so when German manufacturers ship more to the US and less to China or the UK, end-demand shifts along those chains with them.

For a manufacturing SME, the practical reading is less the single monthly number than the pattern: one market can move from carrying to softening within a few months while another catches up. Watch only one sales market and you see that rotation late. Track the relevant target markets side by side and you spot earlier which one is carrying and which is easing.

That upfront work, finding which foreign market fits your product and who buys there, often costs an SME months of research today. ExportFinder turns these market signals into a single basis on which management decides, on its own, which market to assess next.

What Swiss exporters can read from this

German foreign-trade data is a leading indicator for Swiss exporters: month by month it shows where end-demand in Europe's largest economy is heading. July 2026 gives a clear pattern, strength in the US, weakness in China, the UK and the rest of the EU. Whether that is the start of a longer shift or a one-month effect will only become clear with the next releases. The direction, though, is on the record, with a date and a source.
